AS and A2 Chemistry notes and resources (WJEC specification) - UNIT CH5 Physical and inorganic chemistry

This unit develops ideas of redox, kinetics, energy changes and equilibria. The inorganic chemistry of some elements in various sections of the Periodic Table is studied.

15.3 - Applications

Candidates should be able to:

(l) appreciate the very wide range of occurrence of redox processes in chemistry;

(m) explain the principles underlying the operation of the hydrogen fuel cell in terms of the electrode half reactions 2H+ + 2e. H2 and O2 + 4H+ + 4e. 2H2O in the presence of a platinum catalyst, its potential use for storing energy and generating electricity and heat, and the benefits and drawbacks of its use (details of cell construction not required).
